VIPER BASEL 2002 is under the motto ”public I private” and asks about the tension between individual and collective integration in the computer-controlled structures of a media-mediated environment.
Wherever art seeks a position and where technologies want to be innovative, parameters such as perception, individual and society, representation and communication are fundamentally up for discussion. VIPER BASEL 2002 is under the motto public I private and asks about the tension between individual and collective integration in the computer-controlled structures of a media-mediated environment. Traditionally, the focus is on the moving image and positions and concepts are presented that deal aggressively with the potential of new information and communication technologies. The focus is less on the carrier media and more on media-specific strategies and narrative concepts. Because alternative production methods for the digital moving image and the increasing networking of distribution channels create new options for intervention. Interferences between established modes of cinematic reception and experimental forms of narration are increasingly observed. Which images emerge in the dynamic cycles of media anonymity? How does the change in traditional patterns of perception affect the experience of privacy and publicity?

VIPER BASEL works on the basis of non-material and material funding from public and private sources – we are pleased to be able to present a wealth of innovative projects and exciting questions to our Basel audience and our Swiss and international guests.
My family_02 (2002) is a video installation with 6 monitors in a living room / lounge environment that was set up during viper02 in the Foyer of the Theatre Basel/SUI using props from the theatre.
On each of the 6 TV-monitors one category of the footage found on family-websites was on display: Weddings – children – birthdays – family celebrations / festivities – leisure time – pets.
The different family videos write a new family story and ultimately also become my family as well as the family of the viewer. The private becomes public in order to dive back into the private of my experiences and impressions.
