WildLife I
”WildLife I”, Light Installation with painted glass slides.
As a passionate hiker, these strange structures in German forests have fascinated me since I moved here. With the pandemic, I spend more time hiking and the occupation with what is known as hunting high seat in english intensified. In German they are called just high seats – probably because you sit high – I guess – and thus have an overview over the countryside and its animals.
The functional design, that only serves to wait for the game, shows an unexpected diversity in shape and materiality. Unused they look like strange memorials, marking imaginary boundary lines between the hunting districts. Sometimes very spartan, just a ladder with a small seat mounted to a tree, other times they come as small houses on stilts or even mobile on wheels.
The hunt, a holdover from the early days of food supply, today mostly privilege and prestige, which is surrounded by an aura of the wild, original and at the same time highly regulated, commercialized and domesticated up to the high seats.
