2021

Textile Installation with digital prints on Voile, each 210x140cm, variable dimensions

The nocturnal forest is a mythical place full of creatures and unknown forces – we usually visit it only through fairy tales or films. The Ukrainian city of Slavutych is full of small groves that stretch between the so-called Khrushchyovka, the prefabricated buildings from Soviet times. – Not planted, but left standing when Slavutych was built in a very short time in the middle of a pine forest, as a replacement for the radiated Prypiat, where the workers of Chernobyl used to live before the accident. Therefore, it is possible to go for a walk in the woods in the middle of a city at night, surrounded by single lit apartments. The darkness here is only illuminated by sporadic lighting and a good half of the apartments are empty and dark. – Chernobyl doesn’t need so many workers anymore. A Geiger counter is mounted on the cinema in the centre of Slavutych, which displays the current radiation levels. The dense forests in and around Slavutych merge seamlessly into the irradiated zones.
