Aesthetics of Security

2013

Photographic Series, Fine Art pigment print, Edition 3+2AE, size: 110 x 165 cm

The work series Aesthetics of Security derives from a longer stay in Johannesburg/ZAF. The material was mainly shot in the older villa quarters of Johannesburg/ZAF, such as Park View, but can ultimately be read geographically independently.

The staging of security by means of high walls, electric fences, cameras and signs from security companies determines the content as well as the visual, but is only revealed gradually, as all these measures only become visible after a longer period of observation.
At the same time, however, this work is also about the layering of different areas such as the private and the public, which seem to merge with one another on a visual level. – In the foreground, a piece of street, a small sidewalk or strip of grass is visible before a wall restricts the view of what is behind it, but at the same time also contributes to its mystification. Due to the large format presentation, the viewer, like the artist, appears to be in front of it and ultimately outside. The frontal perspective with the selected section can be read like a probing hole or a sample that can be examined more closely under the microscope. The existing staging is no longer staged but shown as such. Patterns can thereby be recognized and an analytical, scientific investigation would be conceivable.
