Group show of the finalists of the PORTRAITS – Hellerau Photography Awards/Dresden at the Dresden Technical Collection.
PORTRAITS – Hellerau Photography Awards with the theme SURFACE. The exhibition venue are the spaces of the Dresden Technical Collections, which also house the extensive collection of the former municipal museum for photography.
Numerous solo exhibitions across the city, including a new exhibition by our current artist in residence Svante Gullichsen (Finland) and a series of public events will round out the competition programme.
The prizes will be awarded at the opening of the finalist exhibition on March 16, 2023.
When it comes to surface, the key word face comes to mind, playing with areas, but also to surface, i.e. to emerge, to appear… A portrait can also be a pure, finely structured surface, Exterior image, play with patterns and details. Photography as a whole relies on surface – yet always tries to go further and deeper. A detailed, meticulous depiction of what is observed is one possible form of approximation. But other aesthetic strategies and photographic means are also conceivable, playing with movement, with blurring, forms of revision…
